Whoopsie Wipes for mealtime

A dry square for the drool and a wet one for the face, and the same square wipes the tray afterwards. Nothing in it that a mouth should not meet.

  • 3 boxes, one square
  • 5–10¢ per wipe
  • 17–100 days at 12 a day
  • $19.95 to $59.95

The box this job usually calls for: Whoopsie Wipes 600 Count.

The trouble with a pre-moistened wipe at the table is what it leaves behind. A face cleaned with it is a face with a thin film of surfactant and fragrance on it, an inch from the mouth, and a toddler’s next move is to lick that inch. A Whoopsie Wipes square wetted at the tap leaves water. Use it dry first for the drool and the dribble of milk, because dry cotton lifts that better than anything wet; then wet the same square, or a fresh one, and take the yoghurt off the chin and the banana off the fingers. Fold it once more and do the tray. One square, three jobs, into the bin.

Two honest limits. A cotton square is not a way of washing hands: the CDC says soap and running water is the way to get rid of germs in most situations, offers an alcohol sanitiser only where soap and water are not available, and does not list wipes at all. Our square gets the food off so the hand-washing can happen. And a dry pack at the table wants a bottle of water beside it, because a dry wipe on dried-on porridge is a scrubbing brush; wet the square first and the porridge lifts. At three meals a day for a child who feeds herself, budget four or five squares a day on top of the changes, and the twelve-pack starts to pay.

This page is general information about cleaning a baby’s skin, not advice about a particular child. A wipe cleans skin and does not treat it; a rash that is not getting better, blisters, oozing, unusual pain or a fever are questions for a pediatrician.

Every box is priced on its own; the Whoopsie Wipes packs keeps the figures current and the till is what decides. The sources behind any statement on this page are on how we update the catalogue.

Questions about Whoopsie Wipes for mealtime

After the yoghurt

Can your toddler put a Whoopsie Wipes square in their mouth?

They will, and it is cotton and water, which is more than can be said for most of what a toddler puts in their mouth. It is not food and it is not a toy: take it away as you would a tissue. But there is no fragrance, lotion or preservative on it to lick off, which is the point of using it near a mouth at all.

Does a Whoopsie Wipes square clean your high chair tray?

Yes, wet, and better than you would think: cotton has some grip on it, and dried-on food comes up with a wet square and a second pass. It is still one square; it does not disinfect anything, and a tray that wants disinfecting wants a cloth and whatever you use on the kitchen counter.

Are Whoopsie Wipes a substitute for washing your child’s hands before eating?

No. The CDC’s answer to that question is soap and water, or an alcohol sanitiser if there is no sink, and it does not put wipes on the list. A square takes the visible dirt off a hand; the sink does the rest. Use the square for what it is good at, which is the face afterwards.
