01When something in every other pack reacts
A wet wipe is a recipe, and when a child reacts to one nobody can say which line of the recipe did it. A cotton square and water is a list with one item on it.
The box this job usually calls for: Whoopsie Wipes 200 Count.
Here is the whole problem with the word on the pack. The FDA says there are no federal standards or definitions behind hypoallergenic, that it means whatever a company wants it to mean, and that nobody has to substantiate it. So when a child’s skin flares after a change and the pack says hypoallergenic, you have learned nothing. What you can do is shorten the list. A pre-moistened wipe has to be kept wet, which means a preservative, and kept pleasant, which usually means a fragrance, and kept slippery, which means a surfactant and a humectant. A Whoopsie Wipes square has cotton on the list and the water you add, and that is the end of the list.
That is not a cure and we do not sell it as one. The dermatologists’ advice on a diaper rash is water and a soft cloth or a fragrance-free wipe, air, and a zinc oxide cream, and a doctor if there is fever, blistering, drainage, or a rash that will not go. A cotton square with warm water is the first item on that list. Buyers write to us about a granddaughter with eczema and a child who reacted to every other brand, and we print those comments as they came, but the sentence we stand behind is a smaller one: one ingredient, no preservative, and you decide what the water is. Start with the two-pack and watch the skin for a fortnight.
This page is general information about cleaning a baby’s skin, not advice about a particular child. A wipe cleans skin and does not treat it; a rash that is not getting better, blisters, oozing, unusual pain or a fever are questions for a pediatrician.

02About this job
When something in every other pack reacts
There is no fragrance in the pack because there is nothing in the pack but cotton. No lotion, no alcohol, no preservative either, since a dry pack has no water in it to preserve. The smell of the square is the smell of cotton, and the smell of the wipe once wet is the smell of your water.
A wipe cleans skin; it does not treat it. What a cotton square does is take four ingredients out of a change that a sore patch might be reacting to, and let you use warm water the way the dermatologists describe. Treatment is cream, air and a doctor when the rash is not going away, and none of that comes in a pack of a hundred.
Tap water at body temperature is what the guidance describes, and it is what most people use. If your tap water is hard and you have noticed it on your own skin, boiled and cooled water in the spray bottle is a cheap experiment. The wipe does not care; the square takes whatever water you give it.
